E-Verify Information
What in the world is "E-Verify?"
E-Verify is an easy to use, web-based, highly accurate, no cost federal database created in 1996 law for the purpose of insuring that newly hired employees are eligible to work in the U.S.
E-Verify is designed to protect American workers, both citizens and real, legal immigrants.
Since 2007, Georgia law (OCGA 13-10-90, created in the Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act of 2006) requires that public employers, like the state of Georgia itself and your city and county governments and all official agencies, use E-Verify to be sure that tax dollars are not going to employ illegals who have escaped capture at our borders. In Georgia, contractors doing business with public employers are also required to use E-Verify.
According to the United States Department of Homeland Security, as of February 20, 2010, more than 12,700 employers are using E-Verify in Georgia at more than 36,000 different worksites and have made more than 151,000 queries in fiscal year 2010.
Nationally, more than 184,000 employers are enrolled in the program, with over 8.7 million queries run through the system in fiscal year 2009. There have been over 4.2 million queries run through the system in fiscal year 2010 (as of January 30, 2010).
E-Verify is mandatory for some employers, such as those employers with federal contracts or subcontracts that contain the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) E-Verify clause and employers in certain states.
Mississippi, South Carolina and Arizona require all employers to use E-Verify in an effort to save jobs for American workers. Here is a map of the thirteen states that have E-Verify laws. The number of states with pending legislation is growing.
THE GEORGIA EMPLOYER AND WORKER PROTECTION ACT OF 2010 (HB 1259, Rep. Bobby Reese, R- Gwinnett), IS PENDING GEORGIA LEGISLATION THAT WOULD SERVE TO PROTECT JOBS FOR GEORGIANS BY EXTENDING USE OF E-VERIFY TO ALL EMPLOYERS.
PLEASE CALL YOUR STATE LEVEL ELECTED OFFICIALS IN GEORGIA AND URGE THEM TO SUPPORT HB 1259!

E-Verify benefits and protects employers with a "safe harbor" provision, eliminating the possibility of federal sanctions for hiring illegal labor when used in good faith.
E-Verify is a win-win tool and makes even more sense with our present unemployment crisis. Do we really want to create jobs in Georgia and then watch as many of them go to black-market labor?
