Dobbs: Voters won’t tolerate ‘axis of amnesty’

NEW YORK (CNN) —

Hang on, the political thrill ride is about to begin. Are you ready? I know I am. And it’s gonna be a hoot.

Our midterm elections are now two months away, and congressional, senatorial and gubernatorial campaigns are about to shift into high gear. After five weeks at home with their constituents, or at least some of them, our elected representatives are now back in session in Washington and fully armed with an understanding of the will of the people, ready to do the people’s business.

Their first order of business? Why, to announce there will be no business done in this session of Congress on the critically important issues of border security and immigration reform. Can you feel the excitement?

Congressional and Senate Republicans have discovered that Karl Rove and his friend, President George W. Bush, not only don’t have a clue when it comes to their favored “comprehensive immigration reform” plans, but also that Rove and Bush’s alliance with open borders Democrats represents an axis of amnesty that their constituents simply won’t tolerate.

Our do-nothing Congress and our do-nothing-right president aren’t exactly wildly popular to begin with. And the Congressional Republican leadership has figured out that in closely contested races, any legislation approximating amnesty for as many as 20 million illegal aliens in this country will amount to wholesale defeat at the polls on November 7.

Even the pro-illegal alien and open borders lobby has finally arrived at the conclusion that the American people won’t tolerate an illegal alien population demanding the same rights as American citizens. And the in-your-face enthusiasm of illegal aliens and their amnesty-advocate supporters has waned as the public understanding of the facts has risen.

For those of you who are not familiar with Sam Zamarripa’s boy, Jerry Gonzalez, it is a hoot to watch him spout the few talking points that he has learned while he tries his best to convince us that he is not for open borders, that illegal immigration is good for America and that illegal aliens should be allowed to remain in the U.S.

Gonzalez is the American who brought about 50 illegal aliens into the Georgia Capitol and the Senate Chambers to lobby against SB 529 and told the Georgia legislators that they should consider the illegals “constituents”.

Until then, please be aware of his efforts to “educate” us on the joys of illegal immigration at various locations around the Atlanta area. I can gaurantee a good time and some good laughs.

Experts will present their points of view on the local response to undocumented immigration in cities like Gainesville and Dalton, undocumented immigrants and the tax base, as well as an economic, social and political analysis of local laws like SB 529, which cracks down on illegal immigration.

“Obviously, in law, there is an issue there because a large majority of the workforce is undocumented, and I think everybody is in agreement that this needs to be dealt with,” says Diaz. “But instead of taking what you hear from the media and a lot of the dialogue out there, we want to add academic information.”

Personally, Diaz believes that it is “dangerous” for states to start passing legislation on a topic “as broad as immigration.”

“It’s dangerous, especially in Georgia, which has a history of intolerance and prejudice,” says Diaz, who expects around 75 people to attend the conference. “There’s a history of racism here in the South.”

McClarty adds that the event is also intended to discuss immigration reform in Georgia and its potential effects on business in order to educate business owners. Therefore, the guest speakers will include State Sen. Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) and Sara Gonzalez, the president of the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GHCC).

According to McClarty, SB 529 will take up most of the discussion, not only because Sen. Rogers will be attending, but also because this legislation requires contractors and subcontractors dealing with government to verify the legal status of their employees starting in 2007 (the date depends on the number of employees). This is expected to have an impact on business.

Stealing an identity to work is becoming more common
Many illegal immigrants using a stranger’s Social Security number for their daily lives

Camber Lybbert thought it was a mistake when her bank told her that her daughter’s Social Security number was on their files for two credit cards and two auto loans, with an outstanding balance of more than $25,000. Her daughter is 3 years old.

For Lybbert and her husband, Tyson, the call was the beginning of a five-month scramble trying to clear up their daughter’s credit history. As it turned out, an illegal immigrant named Jose Tinoco had stolen their daughter’s Social Security number, not in pursuit of a financial crime, but in order to get a job.

The Social Security Administration is legally barred from sharing information with immigration or law enforcement agencies, or from telling the rightful owner of a Social Security number that someone else is using their number, said Mark Hinkle, a spokesperson.

Many have called for better cooperation among the Social Security Administration, IRS and Department of Homeland Security to prosecute workers who use false numbers and companies that hire them.

Anna Cablik should be applauded for taking the position that “it is not right to impose our customs and language on a country that has accepted us” in speaking of immigrants into the U.S. (“English is key, immigrant says. Entrepreneur donates books,” AJC Northside News, Aug. 10).
Until fairly recently, that attitude was simply the common sense norm. Throughout American history immigrants have made it a goal to assimilate into American culture. Learning to speak English was a source of pride.

Sadly, Ms. Cablik’s opinion is not shared by the leftist ethnic groups who preach bilingualism and separatism such as the National Council of La Raza [in English: The Race] and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund [MALDEF].

More sad is that American corporations are the primary donors to these well-funded organizations who label themselves “civil-rights” advocates.

Cablik has used a common catch phrase of these groups: “the immigration system is broken” and observed “I feel for all those wanting to emigrate to the U.S. from Mexico, because there are no visas available.”

Indeed. According to the DHS Office of Immigration Statistics, the number of Mexican-born people who received green cards in fiscal year 2005 was 161,445, out of total legal immigration of 1,122,373. Mexico’s totals were higher than the next two countries, India and China, combined. Maybe Ms. Cablik means that we should accept everyone into our country? If so, we may want to think about making I-75 64 lanes wide instead of the planned 32 in Cobb County. We can figure out the water shortage later. Right?

A poll from last year showed that more than 40 percent of Mexico’s 110 million would emigrate to the U.S. if they could.

We should try to remember that there is no universal civil right to live in the United States. Immigration helped populate America, but like fertilizing one’s lawn, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

We have the highest legal immigration quotas on the planet. We as a nation have nothing to apologize for, and yes, part of the immigration system is “broken.” The enforcing the rules and borders part.

It is past time for Mexican citizens to work hard in Mexico to make theirs a nation that is more like America … not the reverse.

Harper Not Just Americanizing, But Abolishing Canada

For all the continuing concern among Canada’s progressives that Harper is Americanizing this country, it’s unfortunate that there has been silence about the fact that if he has his way, this country as we know it will soon no longer exist.

Plans are on track to establish a North American Union (NAU), a new political and economic entity that would take over governance from the existing countries of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. This is the actual end goal of “deep integration”, also known as the “Big Idea” or “Grand Bargain”, as has been made clear in publications from Robert Pastor’s book Toward a North American Community to the Council on Foreign Relations’ trilateral task force report “Building a North American Community”. It doesn’t seem to matter that the Canadian public remains largely unaware of the plan and its consequences. Nor has it been approved by the U.S. Congress; as Republican Congressman Ron Paul has written, “Congressional oversight of what might be one of the most significant developments in recent history is non-existent. Congress has had no role at all in a ‘dialogue’ that many see as a plan for a North American union”. But political elites in all three countries, in partnership with representatives of giant corporations such as Lockheed Martin, have been working hard to keep making headway despite what the public may think.

In fact, unfortunately, most of the battles have already been won. The steps that have led us down the road towards complete integration with the U.S. have been sometimes slow but still steady since U.S. President Ronald Reagan first spoke about a common North American market back in the early 80s. A series of trade agreements, starting with the first FTA and progressing through NAFTA into the new NAFTA-plus (aka the Security and Prosperity Partnership Initiative) have established the framework for union. (Note that according to the U.S. government website dedicated to the project, the SPP is neither a treaty nor a formal agreement; it is a “dialogue”, a dubious distinction which simply seems meant to prevent official debate and discussion of the SPP among the rest of the elected representatives of the three countries.) The leaders are to meet again in Canada in 2007 to discuss progress in this “dialogue”, at Harper’s invitation.

Harper, of course, is not solely to blame. He was the merely the last Canadian Prime Minister to sign on to the plan, issuing a Leaders’ Joint Statement with the U.S. and Mexico in Cancun in March, but every successive Prime Minister since Mulroney has played his part regardless of party affiliation. The sad fact is it hasn’t seemed to matter if we’ve had a Liberal or Conservative PM—all have been just as willing as Mulroney to sing the praises of the U.S. administration, and just as willing to sign away Canadian sovereignty on the latest in a long series of dotted lines. Mulroney kicked things off by signing the original FTA, although he was acting on the advice of a Royal Commission chaired by former Liberal Minister of Finance Donald S. Macdonald. Chretien signed NAFTA without changes despite his Red Book promise to renegotiate the agreement. And Martin fulfilled his role as an “amigo” to the U.S. at the Waco Summit in 2005, signing the Security and Prosperity Partnership Initiative, the foundation for NAFTA-plus and a future North American Union. Harper has only had to pick up where they left off, although there is little doubt he has been more than willing to do so. Nor has it been any different in the U.S., where it hasn’t mattered whether it was Republicans or Democrats in power—every President since Reagan has been on board.

ACTIVISTS IN cities across the country are gearing up to mark Labor Day with demonstrations in support of the rights of immigrant workers and against deportations and other attacks on the immigrant community.

— In Chicago, immigrant rights activists from the March 10 Coalition have planned a four-day “March for Justice for Immigrant Workers” to begin on September 1 from Chinatown.

Over the course of four days, marchers will make their way to Batavia, Ill., stopping along the way for immigrant rights meetings in houses of worship in Cicero, Melrose Park, Villa Park, West Chicago and elsewhere. On September 4, activists will converge in Batavia, where they will rally at the office of House Speaker Dennis Hastert–one of the main proponents of anti-immigrant legislation in Congress.

— In Los Angeles, activists from Hermandad Mexicana and the March 25 Coalition will hold a women-led march September 2 in support of Elvira Arellano, who is currently under the threat of deportation and took refuge in the Aldalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago. The march will kick off at noon from Olympic and Broadway Streets, and will join together with another Labor Day march that day for a final rally at City Hall.

Activists are also planning a “Labor Day and Solidarity March” for September 4 in Wilmington, Calif., at Banning Park, near the ports of Long Beach. According to leading activist Nativo López, the Teamsters, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and other union members will join immigrant rights activists and their supporters at the rally.

“For the first time, this will be the immigrant rights’ Labor Day with labor workers,” López recently told the Pasadena Star-News. “This will be a show of unity between the labor movement and the immigrant rights movement for fair immigration legislation.”

— In Washington, D.C., the D.C. Amigos del Barrio and the National Capital Immigration Coalition have called for an East Coast mobilization for September 7 at 4 p.m. at the National Mall, with the slogan “Join in the demand for legalization for all!”

— In Newark, N.J., activists will hold a “March in Solidarity with the Rights of Immigrant Workers” on September 4, beginning in Lincoln Park.

The march has been called in solidarity with immigrant workers in Riverside, N.J.–where a recent law punishes those who rent to or hire undocumented immigrants… The march calls for an end to deportations and raids, and amnesty for the undocumented.
