From the AJC on our rally today
Protesters blast proposed immigration reform

The placards reading “Secure Our Borders” and “Stop the Guest Worker Amnesty” may have been pointed at motorists Thursday.

But the mid-day protest outside the Galleria Office Park in Cobb County was really designed to grab attention 13 floors above, in the office suite of Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

“That turncoat sold us down the Rio Grande,” East Cobb resident Maria Litland said, waving an American flag in the direction of the curved glass office building while standing with about 60 other protesters.

Organized by anti-illegal immigration activist D.A. King, the protest was designed to turn up the heat on Chambliss and fellow Georgia Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson. They are among the Senate leaders backing a controversial immigration reform compromise with President Bush.

The bipartisan measure has absorbed a barrage of criticism from both the left and the right since being unveiled earlier this month. Conservatives say it’s too soft on border security and the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the country. Liberals say it would break up immigrant families and give illegal immigrants incentive to remain in the shadows.

Chambliss and Isakson have acknowledged the plan isn’t perfect but say it’s far better than the status quo. They insist the measure would require that the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border be secured before the other reforms, such as the creation of a temporary worker program, could be put in place.

Protester Melanie Williams of Duluth said no matter how it’s dressed up, the Senate compromise would send a clear message to other people considering illegal entry into the United States. “People will sneak in and think ‘Oh, I’ll just wait for the next amnesty,'” Williams said.

Participating in her first-ever protest, Williams said she’s fed up with the people who have crammed into the home across the street from her in Gwinnett County. She suspects they are in the country illegally. At one point there were 30 people in the house and 10 cars in the driveway, she said, holding a banner that declared “We are America — Attrition Through Enforcement.”

A handful of counter-protesters gathered across the street with “Welcome, We Are All Immigrants” signs. Mableton resident Rich Pellegrino, who organized the group, said considering the lack of immigration enforcement over the last two decades, it’s disingenuous to now expel the people who build houses and pluck chickens in Georgia. Pellegrino said he’s gained new respect for the Georgia senators.

“When a politician takes a stand that’s not popular with his constituency,” he said, “that is a statesman, not just a politician.”

But most of those standing at the corner of Akers Mill Road and Galleria Drive had soured on the senators they once backed. They held signs such as “No More Anchor Babies” and “Illegal aliens displace U.S. workers.”

“If they vote ‘yes,'” said Georgia Minutemen organizer Todd Walker, “it’s political suicide.”

DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones, who is running against Chambliss, shook hands with the protesters and told them he wanted to hear their concerns. Pressed on what he’d do differently, Jones said he’d insist on the enforcement of existing immigration laws.

King, the protest organizer and president of the Marietta-based Dustin Inman Society, exchanged business cards with Jones before accompanying 30 or so other protesters up to Chambliss’ office. Though the senator was not present, they met with one of Chambliss’ field representatives. Many wore bumper stickers on their backs. They read “Kick Me! I am a Citizen.”

Listening in on the sales pitch for immigration reform

Saturday, May 26, 2007, 05:47 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Jim Galloway

On Thursday, U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson invited Republican state lawmakers in Georgia to participate in a conference call, to allow them to ask questions on the most volatile topic of the day — the immigration reform package.

About 33 or 34 participated, we’re told. The number is uncertain, because it included at least one extra ear — belonging to illegal immigration opponent D.A. King of Marietta.

At least a pair of somebodies — King won’t say who, but says the information came from more than one person — slipped him the password that allowed him to listen in.

We’re told that Chambliss and Isakson are furious about the breach.

But a brief joint statement put out by the pair on Saturday declined to address it: “Illegal immigration is a difficult, emotional issue. We are working with all Georgians to secure the border first, prohibit a new pathway to citizenship and end illegal immigration.”

We weren’t there, and can’t speak to the specifics. But this conference call — and President Bush’s trip to coastal Georgia on Tuesday — shows you the ferocity with which this issue is being debated among Republicans.

King was kind enough to type up a few notes from the group call. Much of it sounds like what Chambliss and Isakson — the two are in tight coordination — have said before similar audiences.

Perhaps the most important news that King relates is that several of the lawmakers who participated spoke of the intense public opposition to the bill that they’ve encountered.

In response, King said, the senators said there would be further discussion of a “touchback provision” that would require illegal immigrants to leave the United States before coming back under any legal status.

In addition, says King: …

PLEASE READ THE REST HERE ( it is well worth the short free registration) and see my complete notes below. Updated with link to Way Back Machine 22Mar2021 – 12:20 AM dak

My notes on Thursday’s confrence call. The call was about 40-45 minutes.

Thursday, May 24, Conference call scheduled for 5:30 PM between both Georgia U.S. Senators and the Georgia state Rep/Senators.

I had access to conference number and password. I called about 5:33 and was asked the password and my name, I gave my name: Donald King – and was told that I would be on “listen only”.

Call kicked in and I heard Justin Tomzack ( Chambliss aide) in process of beginning to apologize for delay and that the Senators had been called for a roll-call vote and would be here as soon as they could.

Around 5:55 Chambliss aide Camila Knowles came on to again apologize and explain that the senators would be here momentarily…sorry sorry sorry… MUZAK on line.

Just about 6pm it was announced that the senators were now ready a minute later Saxby came on to again apologize and state that he was aware of value of time to all concerned. He said they would not talk long and would then answer questions….it was explained several times that to ask a question, one must press #1.

Chambliss led off by saying that the bill needed to be explained and that because they had both voted NO last year the White House had initiated an effort to get them involved with the new bill.

He adamantly stated that last year’s bill (s 2611) was the worst piece of legislation he had ever seen since going to Washington. “…worst legislation ever”.

He said that unless the bill “could get 60 votes…it was going nowhere”.

He said that Johnny was the main person involved with the border issues and would put him on to answer any questions on that part later.

Chambliss said that they were part of an initial group involved that included “Commerce Sec.Guiterez and others” in many long meetings to work on “amnesty or what ever” but that they were not involved in every conversation and that there were “no back room deals”. ( In AJC column they said they demanded to be included…)

“We have been able to defeat most amendments” that would have killed the bill
( he may have said “destroyed chances”…sorry)

Chambliss then went on to explain that “this stool has three legs” and pointed to border security chain migration and work place verification. Also mentioned that they would have to learn English.

There was little more outline of bill and more that they were not in all parts of conversations of deal And then he put Johnny Isakson on who began by saying he was against last years’ bill because it did nothing to secure the borders and that we need “absolute border security”

He went on to outline that the bill calls for 18,000 Border Patrol Agents to be hired and on duty and 370 miles of fence and border security must be certified by DHS…”there is no fudge factor” and no new path to citizenship..he talked about making illegals go to the back of line for as long as 8 years” and that it “could take them18 years to become a citizen”.

They talked about “no Medicaid and no DIPC”?

Isakson talked at length about an employer ID card that would “self-destruct” if the illegal changed jobs…and made a comparison to Visa cards like we use at the mall….

From here it went back and forth between them…Saxby “….this could be amnesty…but 1986 was amnesty…” Right now illegals cannot be deported” “Right now Sherriff has no authority to arrest illegals but after bill we can deport them, we can ship them out”.

He explained that if passed, “…it would be jail for them” ( maybe “illegals” sorry)

Saxby: the chain migration component is “huge”…and explained that they are no longer in majority, now we are in the minority…”

There was never a mention of the legal status granted nearly immeadiately, long before any promised new border security efforts.that is contained in the first sentence of the first page of the bill…or that about half of the illegals here did not come illegally

NOW QUESTIONS FROM LISTENERS

1st up Tim Bearden….Secure borders first…my district has no confidence and this bill has no support… Isakson: If the border is not secured NOTHING HAPPENS ( a lie)

Next Thomas Knox who pointed out that they would still be able to access emergency rooms and asked how the bill would address local expenses incurred by his district…Knox adamantly express his and his constituents “NO CONFIDENCE in federal government to keep their promise as it had not in 1986 asked why we cannot carry out existing law first with punishment for employers to stop the problem. Exact words” current law first”

Isakson answered quickly that the bill would provide a change to punishment for employers and explained that now employers cannot validate documents and went back to the triggers and chain migration features…and have to learn English… ( not exactly, only say they had attended classes?)

I cannot remember which (U.S.) Senator went back to EMTALA Law (emergency treatment law regardless of ability to pay or immigration status…1986) and said that it could be debated later, but that it wasn’t OK to let someone die in the emergency room and if we were going to debate whether it was OK to let someone die in an emergency room….BUT part of fines on illegals would go to impact of expenses to local govs.

(Through-out, The sales pitch atmosphere was palpable and unnerving from here…yuck)

John Douglas expressed concern for feds doing their job.

Chip Rogers asked question about back taxes and noted that Section 622 m ( page 317) language says that taxpayers would be responsible for paying legal fees ( page 317) for agricultural workers applying for and processing through system for legalization.

I THINK it was Isakson who again said that Z visa holders forfeit all Social Security payments made and that McCain had introduced a future amendment to require Z visas to pay back taxes ( it was taken out by White House originally)

Johnny Isakson did again say that if a Z visa holder quits job, Z visa expires and the holder would NOW be deported.

Saxby then came on and took the real question from Rogers: He said that was an old problem and then went on at length to discuss something that had zero to do with the actual question. Rogers again cited Section 622 m and restated question….Saxby went on again on another around the barn and NEVER acknowledged that the taxpayer DOES pay the legal expenses for Ag Jobs portion of bill for application and legal processing. (Lots of smoke here.) He was not even accurate on his answer to wrong question.

Saxby changed topic.

Isakson: “there is no wiggle room”. Under new law… “illegals can be deported”
CHIP PEARSON question/more of an observation LOTS OF PRESSURE HERE in my district……the senators restated points and again said that nothing happens unless borders are secure ….( this is not what most of us citizens read it)…illegals get probationary status and are removed from illegal status very soon after signed into law…and will be legal whether or not US Gov can run background check in 24 hours…they cannot)

Pearson state that “the message was not getting out there”. The US Senators explained that they were going to do “lots of media” and discuss “another touchback provision”..meaning a requirement that to get probationary status…illegals would have to leave USA.

A caller: ( missed his name) “My district has no confidence in fed gov”

Pearson…illegals will continue to come if triggers not fulfilled… BAD PR to be in photo with Kennedy. SAXBY: BELIEVE ME, IF WE HAD KNOWN THERE WOULD BE CAMERAS THERE “ it would not have turned out as it did…. !!!

More sales talk about it …”reminds me of one time I had my picture made with”….”who was later convicted/accused of?….????

MELVIN EVERSON:

Asked if there was any provision to eliminate birth right citizenship to the guest workers or Z Visa holders…..answer was long …”NO” …and back to felony charges for new illegals. ( we should have that now)

A caller whose name I missed asked about how bill would solve day labor workers problem and people hanging out on corners,,,SAXBY…”NO ID CARD…no work, eventually they will go home through attrition.”…and that “the daylabor problem will not be solved overnight”. ( he is taking our point on the entire problem…attrition through enforcement of current laws.)
Isakson comes on and compares new bill to last year’s….”THIS LAW IS A CHANCE TO SECURE OUR BORDER!

Isakson: “YOU DON’T HAVE A LAW AT PRESENT THAT REQUIRES THE PRESIDENT TO SECURE THE BORDER” THAT WILL HAPPEN BECAUSE OF THIS LAW!”

(Umm…I point to the constitution and the oath of office of all concerned article IV Section 4)

Ending….I missed at least one caller ( he asked about instate tuition to Z visa holders and was told it only applied to legal residents…..was a lot of smoke and I don’t think accurate) because I was e mailing back and forth to Justin Tomzack and telling him that Saxby was wrong on his answer to Rogers…he emailed me back to say I was correct…Saxby thought he was asked about H2B workers…we exchanged 3 e mails…he told me call was for state reps and senators only…I replied that I was on with a “trigger” …he replied that he was giving me amnesty by not cutting off my line…with a smiley face icon.

SAXBY: WE HAVE A WINDOW” to pass bill…”WE DON”T NEED LOCALS TO BE MAKING LAWS”…”We have cities and states are making their own immigration laws….” Not a good thing.

When asked about no confidence in Feds to secure borders, Saxby “WE AREN’T GOING TO CONTRACT WITH THE RUSSIANS”

JI: When asked why fence from last years law is not in place:”The fence is started …did you…photo “see me welding?” Said that there was 72 miles of fence so far built.. ( where?)

I emailed Chris Carr and expressed my amazement and disappointment that I had heard a US Senator say there was no law requiring the President to secure the border and pointed out the constitution and oath of office of all fed elected officials…and that there is a difference between spin and denial….

He called me with in a few minutes…home line, to ask who gave me codes and numbers.. I told him I was not a liberty to say, but that I would say there were more than one person…he assured me that of course the senator knows the president must secure the border and that it is involved the oath of office and constitution.

I told him there was such a thing as right and wrong ,,,he replied that I WAS WRONG FOR NOT DIVULGING NAMES OF WHO GAVE ME ACCESS…”If that’s the way you want to be D.A….” hung up. He seemed upset.

Dustin Inman Society position on amnesty compromise

Posted by D.A. King at 10:50 am - Email the author   Print This Post Print This Post

18 May, 2007

As voters who must deal with the fact that the federal government has refused to secure American borders – and with the huge influx of illegal aliens into our state, we recognize that a path to legalization for the millions of illegal aliens in our nation will not serve as a deterrent for millions more to eventually make their way into our communities.

The costs of illegal employment have devastated the wages of low-income workers in our nation. Legalizing illegal activity will not work towards lowering taxes or raising those wages. Legalizing illegal aliens will only serve to multiply the taxpayer benefits paid to those who have broken American laws to take American jobs.

According to expert testimony from a preliminary study given May 17 to the House Judiciary Committee by Robert Rector of the highly respected Heritage Foundation, the cost of amnesty and earned citizenship for just 7.9 million amnesty recipients would be $2.4 trillion. A cost that must be born by the American taxpayer.

We believe the number of illegal aliens present in the U.S. to be in excess of 20 million.

We understand that the amnesty of 1986 proved beyond all doubt that the only real solution to solving the illegal immigration and illegal employment crisis in our nation and our state is to secure American borders …at any price.

We adamantly oppose any federal legislation that would legalize continued presence for people now present in the U.S. illegally. This is amnesty-again.
We oppose the entire concept of the proposed Z VISA and any “touchback” provision in what is being labeled as “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” in Washington.

Touchback provisions are thinly veiled attempts to put illegal aliens at the front of the very long line of potential immigrants who are not allowed to live and work in the U.S. while pursuing legal residency.

We heartily agree with Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions in his observation that any “grand compromise” legislation will be lengthy and will require considerable inspection before any responsible vote could be taken. We also urge all concerned to carefully read section 113 of last year’s Senate immigration reform bill, the language of which is repeated in both the Flake Gutierrez House bill ( HR 1645) and the Senate bill – s 1348 – presently in consideration in that body.

We support the never – tried concept of attrition of the illegal population by enthusiastic enforcement of existing laws coupled with a verifiable, secure and tamper-proof worker verification ID for all applicants for U.S. jobs coupled with vigorous work-place and border enforcement.

Sadly, we have little faith in the Bush administration’s integrity to certify border security or operational control.

Attrition through enforcement is the only sensible, just and moderate method in taking the first steps to a real solution to the chaos created by the lack of action in the federal government’s obligation in securing America in a war on terror.

We oppose any federal legislation that does not protect American children’s expectation of a secure America and an opportunity to obtain the American dream of the equal and constant application of the rule of law in America.

We urge the U.S. Senate to just say “NO” to any illegal alien legalization legislation, including the proposed “Z VISA” system.

We urge the U.S. Congress to heed the findings and recommendations of the Jordan Commission on Immigration Reform of 1995 and restate the words and spirit of the testimony of Barbara Jordan – that commission’s Chair – to Congress during the Clinton Administration: “Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave — deportation is crucial. Employer sanctions can work”
We will never forget any vote that grants a path to legalization for illegal aliens, and we note that there is no penalty for the millions of employers who are granted the same…amnesty.

Newton GOP hosts anti-illegal immigration activist

By Adam Thompson
Staff Reporter
adam.thompson@rockdalecitizen.com

COVINGTON — Fresh off of a rally within shouting distance of the White House, Marietta-based activist D.A. King brought his anti-illegal immigration message to a cozy meeting of the Newton County Republican Party this week.

King, speaking on Thursday to a group of about 15 that included three local state legislators, cast the current enactment of U.S. immigration policy as “national suicide.”

“I came here to beg you to help me and a growing number of Americans opposed to what’s coming out of Congress,” said King, standing in the meeting room of the Covington Women’s Club.

In the picture painted by King, wealthy interests are keeping border security and immigration reform efforts out of Congress and the White House while the United States is being infiltrated by about 1 million illegal immigrants each year.

“I would challenge anyone to say we are not being invaded,” he said.

The presence of an estimated 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States — King claims it’s more like 25 million — poses a threat to the country’s national security and its identity, he said.

The porous border with Mexico is especially dangerous, he added, saying that it has been an entrance point for people from countries with known ties to terrorism.

“They’re not here to mow your lawn — they’re here to blow up your buildings and kill your children, and you, and me,” he said.

To prove his point, he flaunted two authentic Mexican government-issued photo ID cards — called matriculas consulares — that he said he was able to get using fake Mexican birth certificates. One of them lists his name; the other is under the name “Al Qada Gonzalez.” ( Note from D.A. – no, mine, like many, are fake)Current enforcement is so lax, he said, that the cards can be used in some states to obtain valid drivers licenses and board airplanes.

Georgia, which has seen a large influx of illegal immigration in recent years, should also be prepared to become a new front for problems with employment and crime that have been seen in border states, he said.
King is a former Marine and a former insurance agent who used to travel around the region, spending two or three days a week in Newton County, he said.

He quit his job three years ago and now funds all of his activities himself through his savings and two refinancings of his home in Marietta, he said.

As the founder of the Dustin Inman Society — named after a friend’s son who was killed seven years ago in a car wreck involving an illegal immigrant — King contributes his opinion to newspapers and television news shows, and delivers his message at large rallies and grass-roots gatherings.

He has been asking federal and state legislators for an “equal application of the law” when it comes to immigration.

He is quick to point out that he represents neither Republicans nor Democrats and does not tolerate any anti-immigration rhetoric motivated by race — his is a legal argument, he said.

King’s group has also asked that English be formally declared the national language, “so that nobody misunderstands us,” he said.

Congress has yet to pass any illegal immigration reform despite various proposals being tossed around, including the guest worker program supported by President George W. Bush.

Though full amnesty has not been a popular proposal, the temporary visa and guest worker proposals amount to just that, King said.

On Thursday, he advocated what he called “attrition through enforcement”: securing, at any cost, the United States’ border with Mexico and then enforcing existing laws a little at a time — a process that “won’t be solved overnight.”

State Rep. Doug Holt, R-Social Circle, who attended the meeting Thursday, thanked King for his efforts to prevent what “could ultimately lead to the balkanization of the United States.”

Along with Holt, State Rep. John Lunsford, R-McDonough, and State Sen. John Douglas, R-Covington, were in attendance.

Steve Bray, the Newton Republican Party’s new chairman, invited King to speak and said he hoped the activist’s address would “kickstart” a new, energized period for the party.

Immigration reformists tip support to a Norwood ally
By Jerry Seper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
April 17, 2007

One of the Republicans campaigning to fill the House seat of Rep. Charlie Norwood, a staunch immigration reform advocate who died in February, has won the endorsement of two of Georgia’s most prominent proponents of immigration control and border security.
D.A. King and Phil Kent — both outspoken opponents of amnesty for illegal aliens — formally endorsed Georgia state Sen. Jim Whitehead during a press conference last week on the steps of the Georgia Capitol in Atlanta.
“This is a pivotal issue for the future of America,” said Mr. Whitehead. “We have to have the intestinal fortitude to protect all Americans. If we are to remain a nation of laws, we must stand firm against any form of amnesty for those who are here illegally.
“If we start vigorously enforcing the law, we can gradually reduce the number of illegal immigrants without either amnesty or mass deportation,” he said.
Mr. King, president of the Dustin Inman Society, said “the very large shoes left by Charlie Norwood” were best filled by Mr. Whitehead because he understands that “this crisis did not come about overnight and that amnesty is something that will keep this problem from ever coming under control. The solution is attrition through enforcement.”
Mr. Kent, national spokesman for Americans for Immigration Control (AIC), described Mr. Whitehead as a longtime friend and a strict constitutionalist, “especially when it comes to illegal immigration, and I’m happy to endorse him.”
AIC itself does not make endorsements because of its status as a nonprofit organization.
Considered the early front-runner in the race, Mr. Whitehead is one of at least a dozen candidates who have mentioned running for the position, which became vacant when Mr. Norwood died in February. State election officials have said that candidate qualifying will begin April 24 and the special election will be held June 19.
Mr. Norwood was a vocal critic of President Bush’s immigration policies and called on the administration to deploy 50,000 U.S. troops to guard America’s southern and northern borders.
Mr. Norwood unsuccessfully sought the passage of legislation to give 600,000 state, local and tribal police officers authority to enforce federal immigration laws and said the Minuteman Project’s civilian border patrols proved that illegal aliens can be kept out with an adequate show of manpower.
“The American people want the borders secured,” Mr. Norwood told The Washington Times in November. “They want existing laws vigorously enforced against criminal aliens, illegal immigrants and their employers. Then they are willing to discuss what to do about illegal aliens already in the country.”
Mr. Whitehead, 65, was first elected to the Georgia Senate in 2004 and re-elected in 2006. He currently serves as chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, vice chairman of the Transportation Committee, a member of the Economic Development and Natural Resources committees, and deputy whip for Senate Republicans.

PRESS CONFRENCE TOMORROW AT THE GEORGIA CAPITOL

Posted by D.A. King at 12:59 pm - Email the author   Print This Post Print This Post

Dustin Inman Society supporters:

PRESS CONFRENCE TOMORROW AT THE GEORGIA CAPITOL

Georgia Congressman Charlie Norwood, a national treasure and a great American, passed away recently. With the exception of the illegal alien/open borders lobby, we will all miss him and his courage very much.

Norwood’s Congressional ( Ga. District 10 ) seat will be filled by a special election on June 19, 2007.

The Dustin Inman Society has endorsed Georgia state Senator Jim Whitehead as the best candidate for the office. Jim understands that we can begin to solve our national illegal immigration crisis by securing our borders and enforceing our laws…the concept of attrition through enforcement. D.A. will be a speaker at a press conference to endorse Jim at the Georgia Capitol on Thursday, April 12, 2007.

The short press conference will be held on the Capitol steps at 11:00 AM…tomorrow.

If you can get away and come to the Capitol to show the media our support tomorrow, it will be a big help to Jim and his effort to continue Congressman Norwood’s struggle for border security and the equal application of U.S. immigration and employment laws in Congress.

The Jim Whitehead for Congress Website here .

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow if you can come to the Georgia Capitol!

Thanks…dak

The Dustin Inman Society will host a rally in a demand for secure American borders and to oppose any legislative attempt at a repeat of the1986 path to citizenship amnesty for illegal aliens.

The rally is scheduled in conjunction with the five-day HOLD THEIR FEET TO THE FIRE event in Washington hosted by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and Roger Hedgecock, former San Diego mayor and well known radio talk show host.

During the week, more than two dozen radio talk show hosts from all over the U.S. will be broadcasting from Washington from the grassroots event aimed at Congress and the President.

List of participating talk show hosts here.

Rally information

WHERE: Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House, Washington D.C.

WHEN: Sunday, April, 22, 2007 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM

SPEAKERS LIST: Linked here.
Named for one of the thousands of Americans who have paid the ultimate price for America’s unsecured borders and the resulting illegal immigration crisis, the Dustin Inman Society is a Georgia-based, non-partisan coalition of Americans opposed to illegal immigration and employment.

“In 1986, we proved that a path to citizenship for illegal aliens does not secure our borders or put an end to illegal immigration – or employment” said D.A. King, columnist for the Marietta (Georgia) Daily Journal and president of the Dustin Inman Society.

The Dustin Inman Society strongly supports the as yet untried concept of securing American borders – at any price – and the vigorous enforcement of the rule of law in the work-place – to begin to solve the decades-old crisis. (Attrition through enforcement)

The rally, like the Dustin Inman Society, has no agenda other than secure borders and the equal application of American laws. No other agenda will be welcomed or tolerated.

Amnesty Follies
The false inevitability of “Comprehensive immigration reform.”

By Mark Krikorian

Center for Immigration Studies

When the Democrats won in November, there was a sense that an illegal-alien amnesty and huge increases in future immigration were inevitable. Even Rep. Tom Tancredo, the uber-hawk on immigration, was taken in: “We will fight it, we will lose,” he told the Washington Times. “It will go to the Senate, it will pass. The president will sign it. And it will happen quickly because that’s one thing they know they can pass.”

Sometimes it’s good to be wrong.

This week, even as President Bush was pledging to the Mexican people that he would pursue their interests in working for an immigration bill, the political edifice of such a bill was falling apart.

Ted Kennedy and John McCain announced this week that they were giving up on crafting a new immigration bill and would instead revive the one approved last year by the (Republican) Senate Judiciary Committee (which was different in certain ways from the Hagel-Martinez amnesty finally passed by the Senate). There’s going to be a lot more sound and fury in Congress over immigration, but, as Roll Call writes, “it still appears unlikely that comprehensive reforms will move out of the [Senate] chamber before electoral concerns kill the bill.”

It’s interesting to note that, despite all the talk of the Right-Left, odd-bedfellows coalition backing the amnesty push, it is partisan differences that are torpedoing the effort. Both the good and bad elements of each political party’s character are proving to be stumbling blocks.

On one side, there is the Republicans’ characteristic support for law and order, for enforcement, and for American sovereignty. To appeal to that sentiment in Republicans skeptical of amnesty, the Bush administration has permitted a limited increase in immigration enforcement, after many years of intentional neglect (by 2004, for instance, only three employers in the entire country had been fined for knowingly hiring illegal aliens). This has brought to the fore an unattractive aspect of the Democrats, who have been ferociously critical of all these enforcement efforts; most recently, Sen. Kennedy himself has been relentlessly lambasting the administration for having the temerity to raid a Massachusetts leather factory (that supplied the Army!) that was full of illegal aliens knowingly hired by management. Republicans are thus naturally skeptical that Democrats are sincere in their commitment to the sustained, muscular enforcement that they’ve promised in exchange for amnesty and increased immigration.

Immigration hawks need to demand that this new enforcement not only be continued, but that it be stepped up. For instance, the Justice Department should formally release a 2002 legal opinion highlighting the inherent authority of states and localities to arrest immigration violators (see a redacted version of the memo here). Congress must authorize the IRS and Social Security to share information with immigration authorities on the millions of illegal aliens they have information on. The Democratic leadership cannot be allowed to drop down the memory hole the fencing that Congress overwhelmingly approved last year. And, in general, additional measures needed to achieve attrition through enforcement must be implemented.

The rest….

THE BANK’S SIDE OF THE STORY

Bank officials have been quoted saying that they aren’t trying to make a political statement on immigration policy but just trying to make a buck.

Money is their aim, they say, to increase profits by providing financial credit for what they call the great “untapped” market of potential customers among the illegal population in the United States.

“These people are coming here for quality of life, and they deserve somebody to give them a chance to achieve that quality of life,” says Brian Tuite, the bank’s director of Latin America card operations, who hopes the illegal aliens will be able to buy homes, cars, furniture and anything else it takes to settle down permanently in this country.

The Bank’s effort directly undercuts federal Attrition Through Enforcement & Self-Deportation programs designed to make the quality of life low enough and uncomfortable and unpredictable enough that illegal aliens pay their own way to go back home.

Many in Grassroots America feel that the Bank of America needs to be made an example for the rest of corporate America lest the temptation of pure, unpatriotic greed drive other businesses to abandon the American people and the rule of law, as well.

Good luck in circulating this opportunity,

— ROY (Beck)
