A coalition of legal and social justice organizations are holding a free legal training at 6 p.m. Tuesday for lawyers, students and others who want to volunteer to help at protests.
Attendees will first learn how both lawyers and nonlawyers have provided support for recent protests and then they may choose from four training sessions: pro bono legal representation and pre-protest training, which both require a law license—and legal observer and jail support, which do not require any legal background.
“The recent protests in Atlanta have demonstrated the increased need for trained legal volunteers to support the social justice movement,” said an announcement from the DeKalb Lawyers Association, one of the event’s organizers.
The event is co-sponsored by the Southern Center for Human Rights; Gate City Bar Association; DeKalb Lawyers Association; Georgia and GSU chapters of the National Lawyers Guild; ACLU of Georgia; GSU Black Law Students Association; Mercer BLSA; Black Lives Matter Atlanta; LUNA; Rise Up Georgia; NAACP of Georgia, Atlanta and Decatur; Malcolm X Grassroots Movement Atlanta; Let Us Make Man; Law Offices of Gerry Weber; The Burton Law Firm; Simmons Law; R. Gary Spencer; Law Firm of Gerald A. Griggs; the Cochran Firm; and the Davis Bozeman Law Firm.
The training is set to take place in the conference center of Georgia State University’s law school at 85 Park Place, which is downtown near Woodruff Park.
