Immigration concerns have prompted Georgia’s universities to take a closer look at their own admission procedures.

Members of the University of Georgia Board of Regents are meeting to discuss the issue — a meeting prompted by the Kennesaw State University student who was getting in-state tuition even though she’s not a documented U.S. citizen.

The board is requiring the state’s 35 public colleges and universities to do residency and citizenship checks for all 300,000 students in the system in the next two months. Currently, illegal immigrants can attend college in Georgia but must pay out-of-state tuition, which is at least three times as expensive at many campuses than in-state fees.

Critics say the board is violating state law by allowing illegal immigrants to attend public colleges. But board members have said they believe they are following the law.
