SMYRNA – Hundreds of religious followers are expected to unite in Cobb on Thursday for the 2009 Holy Week Interfaith Pilgrimage for Immigrants.
Organizers are calling for the end of law enforcement raids that they say separate families, passage of humane immigration reform legislation, and the revision of trade policies that increase unauthorized immigration.
The 50-mile walk began Sunday in Gainesville, continued through much of Gwinnett County the following three days and comes to Smyrna and Marietta on Thursday. It ends Friday in Atlanta.
The route passes through immigrant communities and places where organizers say immigrants suffer, such as local jails and federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices. The event was intended to coincide with the Christian Holy Week.
We pray that somehow we can find a better solution to the problem that is before us because there has to be a better way than just deporting people,” he said. “It’s a massive problem that nobody seems to be tending to, so we are just going to pray about it.”
As may be expected in the often-heated immigration debate, not everyone is supportive of the pilgrimage.
Cobb immigration activist D.A. King said the lives of American workers are ruined as a result of the lost wages, services and benefits that come from illegal labor.
“This sadly comical march is another attempt from the usual suspects in the radical, open-borders movement to stop the enforcement of American immigration laws by shamelessly using children and families as shields,” he said.
