Everyone working on the new $63 million Cobb courthouse being built near the Square will be subjected to fresh background checks by the Sheriff’s Office, as the county is assuming control of security and trying to ensure that no illegal immigrants step foot on the jobsite, county officials announced Tuesday.

“Cobb County has had enough of any perception of illegals working on projects,” Commissioner Bob Ott said. “We need to make sure we are comfortable in saying we only have legal workers working on projects.”

After the Board of Commissioners’ Tuesday morning meeting, where members from workers group Jobs for Georgians again stated concerns that illegal immigrants continue to work on the courthouse, commissioners asked County Manager David Hankerson to meet with the sheriff and other stakeholders to address the issue. At 3:30 p.m., Hankerson met with Sheriff Neil Warren, his deputies and representatives from general contractor Turner Construction Company. Commissioners were not present, Ott said.

“What was decided on is the county is assuming control of security and legitimacy of all those working on the site,” Ott said. “Because of the sheriff’s extensive training with ICE and 287(g), he is the best to enforce the law. We are taking full responsibility to make sure people are eligible to work in Cobb.”

Previously, the county and Turner Construction implemented a photo identification system for each individual that enters the worksite. The IDs were cross-referenced with the federal citizenship authorization program E-verify to identify work status, said Allen Kronenberger, project manager for the county’s property management department. Those employees then got ID badges and were subjected to site checks each day by Turner personnel, Kronenberger told commissioners in an e-mail.

Now, each worker will go through a more extensive background check by the Sheriff’s Office and get a new badge, Ott said. There will also be spot checks performed by sheriff deputies, he said.

“It’s a big undertaking, but it lets citizens know that the county is making sure that workers are legal,” Ott said. “
One of the big things to point out, not one ethnic group is being singled out. Every new contractor, worker (will be subjected to the new measures). The reality is, they would have to check me if I were to try to work there.”

Sheriff Warren said, “We have a responsibility to the public, the judicial system and the citizens of Cobb County to make sure this site is both safe and secure.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the new measures will be phased in beginning this week.

Hankerson said, “Our Board of Commissioners have listened to the public and made this issue a high priority.”

The courthouse is expected to be completed by December.

“At first, the commissioners wanted to have a sheriff’s deputy at a gate where everyone would have to come through, but as construction occurs 16 hours a day with three points of access on the site and 300 workers on and off the site a day, it just was not going to be feasible,” county spokesman Robert Quigley said.

Ott said the new measures stem from concerns from residents and groups such as Jobs for Georgians “to really tighten up security on the site.”

Members of the watchdog group Jobs for Georgians went before the Board of Commissioners in early February and presented claims that Zebra Construction, the masonry subcontractor on the courthouse project, hired illegal immigrants.

During the Jobs for Georgians’ undercover investigation, JosĂ© Alvarez said he visited the site from November until January, posing as a bricklayer. Alvarez said he befriended many of the Zebra workers and has a recorded conversation with a blocklayer that proves workers were being paid in cash, were not checked under E-verify, and were not paying income or Social Security taxes.

Chip Kessler, president of Suwanee-based Zebra, earlier said the contractor hired by his company to manage the blocklayers, Victor Candelaria, was pulled from the project Feb. 5, when they learned he was not enrolled in E-verify.

Alvarez estimated that 14 workers employed by the subcontractor were illegal immigrants.

Rich Pellegrino, director of immigrant advocacy group Cobb Immigrant Alliance, said the sheriff is “overstepping” the 287(g) agreement, which Cobb has with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to check the immigration status of everyone booked into the county jail.

Pellegrino said Warren will be using the agreement to do the new background checks and, “He’s only allowed to use it in the prison
Really, what they are trying to do is mimic Arizona and see how far they can go here.”

* Video * Regents discuss Verification – still demand to allow illegal aliens into Georgia university system

Posted by Fred Elbel at 2:49 pm - Email the author   Print This Post Print This Post

From MyFox Atlanta

Immigration concerns have prompted Georgia’s universities to take a closer look at their own admission procedures.

Members of the University of Georgia Board of Regents are meeting to discuss the issue — a meeting prompted by the Kennesaw State University student who was getting in-state tuition even though she’s not a documented U.S. citizen.

The board is requiring the state’s 35 public colleges and universities to do residency and citizenship checks for all 300,000 students in the system in the next two months. Currently, illegal immigrants can attend college in Georgia but must pay out-of-state tuition, which is at least three times as expensive at many campuses than in-state fees.

Critics say the board is violating state law by allowing illegal immigrants to attend public colleges. But board members have said they believe they are following the law.

Dan Stein on Remembering Terry Anderson

Dan Stein on Remembering Terry Anderson

Terry Anderson’s tragic passing is an irreplaceable loss for the nation. He exemplified what is best about being an American citizen. Terry was always unwilling to accept compliments or accolades. He was not interested in honor, recognition or high position. He merely sought to tell the truth as he saw it, and to make a difference in the lives of those he cared about. In doing so, he exposed certain grim realities of decades of neglect and betrayal for the community he called home.

No one better exemplified the distance between the true interests of the African American community and the positions of the professional leadership in American politics. Terry was always the real deal, authentic, honest, straightforward and unafraid. Terry was not only a man of action, he inspired others to act. He did so because he gave others courage. When he stood up to speak, everyone listened, everyone heard and everyone understood. He was a man of uncommon honesty and integrity. He spoke from his heart and did so in a way that Americans needed to hear.

No one can ever replace Terry. He made a huge difference for America and the neighborhood he sought to save from the uncaring hand of our political system.

Exodus of Mexicans from Arizona increases

The president of the Migratory Affairs Commission of the Michoacan state congress, Antonio Garcia Conejo, said that the exodus of Mexicans from Arizona has “intensified” between 40 and 50 percent, mainly to Nevada and Texas. With two weeks to go before Arizona‘s law SB1070 becomes effective, the legislator noted that some 10,000 to 12,000 persons from the state of Michoacan were residing in Arizona “without papers.” (The article, without attribution, also repeats the common error of saying that the Arizona law would cause law enforcement personnel to detain all Latinos, due simply to their appearance, to verify that they are carrying their papers and, if not, to be arrested.)

Maywood, California collapse – A Lesson to Be Learned

by Roger Hedgecock

06/25/2010

Boasting a population that is 97% Hispanic, more than half foreign born, and 40% illegal, the Los Angeles County, Calif., incorporated city of Maywood has achieved the Reconquista goal. It is now as lawless and chaotic as any place in Mexico . Maywood is a warning to every city and town in America .

The Maywood City Council announced this week that after years of radical policies, corruption and scandal, the city was broke and all city employees would be laid off and essential city services contracted out to neighboring cities or to L.A. County government.

How did this happen? Until recently, Maywood was the model for “brown power” politics.

Maywood was the first California city with an elected Hispanic City Council, one of the first “sanctuary” cities for illegal aliens, the first city to pass a resolution calling for a boycott of Arizona after that state passed a law to enforce federal immigration laws, the first California city to order its police department not to enforce state laws requiring drivers to have licenses to drive, the first American city to call on Congress to grant amnesty to all illegals.

Council meetings were conducted in Spanish. Maywood was the leader in the peaceful, democratic achievement of the La Raza goal to take power in the U.S.

The City of Maywood started out quite differently. Back after World War II, Maywood was a booming blue-collar town with good jobs, a multi-ethnic suburb of Los Angeles .

On the 25th anniversary in 1949 of Maywood ‘s incorporation as a city, the town celebrated with a beard-growing contest, a rodeo, and wrestling matches in City Park . Chrysler operated an assembly plant there until 1971.

But the early 1970s saw these industrial jobs in aerospace, auto and furniture manufacturing, and food processing evaporate under the pressure of higher taxes, increased local and state regulation, and the attraction of cheaper land and cheaper labor elsewhere.

The multi-ethnic Maywood of the post-war years was transformed in the ’80s and ’90s by wave after wave of Hispanic immigrants, many of them illegal.

In August 2006, a “Save Our State” anti-illegal immigration rally in Maywood drew hundreds of protesters—but a larger number of defenders of illegal immigration. The pro-illegal protesters carried signs which read “We are Indigenous ! The ONLY owners of this Continent!” and “Racist Pilgrims Go Home” and “All Europeans are Illegal Here.”

According to newspaper reports at the time, objectors to illegal aliens were subject to physical attacks. A 70-year-old man was “slashed,” a woman attacked, and cars vandalized. Pro-illegal demonstrators raised the Mexican flag at the U.S. Post Office.

The illegal population and their sympathizers became increasingly radicalized. Elections to the City Council saw “assimilationist” incumbent Hispanic council members ousted by La Raza supporting radical challengers.

For years, the Maywood City Council authorized police checkpoints to stop drunk driving. Drivers without licenses had their cars impounded. Illegals in California cannot get drivers licenses. By 2005, the number of such impounds were in the hundreds. A community campaign was launched forcing the City Council to suspend the checkpoints.

Cars were still being impounded whenever a police traffic-violation stop resulted in a driver without a license. Felipe Aguirre, a community activist with Comite Pro-Uno, an “immigration service center,” coordinated a new campaign against any impounds. He was elected in 2005 to the City Council. He is the mayor of Maywood today.

Aguirre and a new majority of the council dismantled the Traffic Department. Illegals were given overnight-parking permits and impounds stopped. You didn’t need a license to drive in Maywood . The Los Angeles Times wrote glowingly of this “progress” in a story entitled “Welcome toMaywood , Where Roads Open Up For Immigrants”.

The Maywood Police Department was restructured by the new council. A new chief and new officers were hired. Later it turned out that many of the new officers had previously been fired from other law enforcement agencies for a variety of infractions. The Maywood P.D. was known as the “Department of Second Chances.”

Among those hired was a former L.A. Sheriff’s deputy terminated for abusing jail inmates; a former LAPD officer fired for intimidating a witness; and an ex-Huntington Park officer charged with negligently discharging a handgun and driving drunk.

Even the L.A. Times called the Maywood Police Department a “haven for misfit cops.” Their story alleged that a veteran officer was extorting sex from relatives of a criminal fugitive; that another officer tried to run over the president of the Maywood Police Commission; and that another officer has impregnated a teenage police-explorer scout.

Charges of corruption and favoritism led to one recall of city council members and threats of more recalls are heard to this day.

Maywood is represented in the state Senate by Democrat “One Bill” Gil Cedillo. He earned the nickname by introducing every year in the state legislature a bill to grant drivers licenses to illegals. Maywood is represented in Congress by Democrat Lucille Roybal-Allard, a staunch advocate of amnesty for illegals.

Today, Maywood is broke. Its police department dismantled along with all other city departments and personnel. Only the city council remains and a city manager to manage the contracts with other agencies for city services in Maywood .

Maywood is the warning of what happens when illegal immigrants, resisting assimilation as Americans, bring with their growing numbers the corruption and the radical politics of their home countries. Add the radical home-grown anti-Americanism of Hispanic “leaders” and groups like La Raza and you get schools where learning is replaced with indoctrination, business and jobs replaced by welfare and gangs, and a poisonous stew of entitlement politics.

In too many American communities, this sad tale is all too familiar.
