The Wonk Room (“Progressive” Twaddle)

Dick Armey Wants Tom Tancredo Out Of His Tea Party Tent

Recently, tea party profiteer and FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey has taken a more vocal stance against anti-immigrant rhetoric. In an interview with Charlie Rose that aired late last week, Armey went as far as to list former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) as representing part of the “tea party tent” that he feels “uncomfortable” with due to his “harsh and uncharitable and mean-spirited” immigration positions…

Three Georgia Republican state Senators join GALEO’s Nan Orrock (D), La Raza and the ACLU and some of the Democrat minority on the Senate Public Safety committee in endorsing a repeat of the 1986 amnesty for illegal aliens – Vote “YES DO PASS” on Senate Resolution 570.

You can read the as passed committee substitute version of SR 570 endorsing comprehensive immigration reform HERE.

Orrock’s original version HERE.

According to a recent DHS/census report, Georgia leads the nation in the growth rate of the illegal alien population. State laws aimed at compliance with federal immigration laws are being ignored.

The General Assembly is struggling to cut the budget while we fail to enforce federal and state laws that would drive more illegal aliens out of our state.

Yesterday, state Senators John Crosby (R- Tifton District 13), Johnny Grant (R- Milledgeville District 25) and Jeff Mullis (R- Chickamauga District 53) joined some of the Dems on the committee and voted “YES, Do Pass” on a Resolution introduced by Senator Nan Orrock ( Democrat Senator Freddie Powell Sims voted “NO” ) endorsing “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”

Yes

Senators:

Jones (D) , Mullis (R), Seay (D), Crosby (R), Grant (R) and Butler (D)

New Polls Show Broad-Based Support for Immigration Enforcement

While pro-amnesty advocates increase their pressure on the Obama Administration to pass “comprehensive immigration reform,” recent polls show strong support for immigration enforcement, even among minorities, business executives, union members, and parishioners. In February, Zogby released the results of a survey of roughly 700 Hispanic, 400 African-American, and 400 Asian-American likely voters. The Zogby poll found that, when asked to choose between enforcement that would cause illegal aliens in the country to go home or offering them an amnesty, 52 percent of Hispanics, 57 percent of Asian-Americans, and 50 percent of African-Americans support the enforcement option.A Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) analysis of the poll results concluded that despite the perception that minority voters support amnesty as a monolithic bloc, the reality is that minorities “want enforcement and less immigration.” (Id.).

New Initiative to Attract Latinos to Conservative Movement Mirrors Liberals’ Policy, Critic Charges
Wednesday, February 17, 2010
By Penny Starr, Senior Staff Writer

Alfonso Aguilar, former chief of the U.S. Office of Citizenship during the George W. Bush administration, spoke at an event Tuesday to launch the American Principles Project’s initiative to bring more Latinos into the conservative movement. (CNSNews.com/Penny Starr)

(

CNSNews.com) – The American Principles Project (APP) has launched an initiative designed to bring Latinos into the conservative movement by “supporting policies that are welcoming to immigrants,” but critics said one of the policies – the pathway to citizenship plan – is identical to the open border stance of President Barack Obama and other liberals.

These policies include a five-point plan for comprehensive immigration reform that would offer a pathway to citizenship for people in the country illegally, strengthening border security and creating a guest worker program.

The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles initiative, which was unveiled at a press conference on Tuesday at the National Press Club, also calls for eliminating workplace raids and establishing a “path for undocumented immigrants to earn legal status” by paying a fine and learning English.

“That’s exactly, word for word, what the Democrats say,” Mark Krikorian, executive director of the conservative Center for Immigration Studies, told CNSNews.com. “This is the Republican Auxiliary of the left’s open border movement.”

When CNSNews.com asked how APP’s plan differs from what many conservatives think would give illegal aliens amnesty, Alfonso Aguilar, who served as the chief of the U.S. Office of Citizenship in the George W. Bush administration, said he believes there are many “pro-immigrant” conservative leaders who would agree with the initiative.

“I want to be very clear that we believe that the rule of law is one of the fundamental principles of our country,” Aguilar said. “We wouldn’t do anything or promote anything that would go against the rule of law.

“That’s what the system is based on,” Aguilar said. “But the rule of law in a proper, in a constitutional sense, in a court of law sense, means that you have to take the violation and put it in the context of the penalty,” he said. “And entering the country illegally is not a crime. It’s a violation.”

Conservative activist Grover Norquist is an adviser to the initiative, which would provide a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens in the U.S. by requiring them to pay a fine and learn English. (CNSNews.com/Penny Starr)
Conservative activist Grover Norquist, who serves as an advisor for the initiative, told CNSNews.com that there is precedent for conservatives wanting to change what he called bad laws.

“Back in the 1970s, we had a 55-mile-an-hour speed limit on national highways,” Norquist said. “I don’t know of conservatives of the time insisting that we enforce the law.”

“The conservative position was: Change the law,” Norquist said. “We need to have our immigration laws fit what our country’s needs are.”

But Norquist and APP founder Robert P. George are known for supporting open border policies, Krikorian said, adding that the “anti-immigrant” argument used to promote amnesty is built on a faulty premise.

“The premise is that opposition to amnesty is inherently anti-immigrant,” Krikorian said. “Legalizing illegal immigrants is a stand-alone policy question and has nothing to do with being anti-immigrant.”

In a press release distributed at Tuesday’s event, George said the initiative would “lead the conservative movement in carrying its message to the Latino community and to welcome Latinos as partners in promoting the fundamental principles on which this country was founded.”

That partnership includes working to gain Latinos’ support for conservative political candidates, in particular those who share the APP’s view on immigration reform. That strategy, according to Krikorian, will not help Republicans win elections.

“If Republicans think by becoming more like Democrats means Latinos will vote for them, that’s silly,” Krikorian said, adding that that style of conservatism is what kept Republicans from majority status in Congress for four decades.

But Norquist said at the press conference that Republicans have a history of shutting out certain demographics from the party.

“We need to avoid doing what the Republican Party did 100 years ago with Roman Catholics, which was to kick them away for 100 years,” Norquist said.

Krikorian said he believes that the conservatives who are embracing the liberals’ immigration amnesty plan may be motivated by their sense of immigrant ancestry.

“They are not thinking of their grandchildren,” Krikorian said. “They are thinking of their grandfathers, and that’s not a good way to make immigration policy.”

Sen. Judson Hill Announces Legislation Protecting Georgia’s Public Works Jobs

MARIETTA (Mar. 8, 2010) – State Sen. Judson Hill (R-Marietta) today introduced the Georgia Public Works and Contractor Protection Act (Senate Bill 460) to help safeguard taxpayer-funded jobs in Georgia. This important new legislation aims to clarify the existing legal process for obtaining public contracts and the employee eligibility verification system. SB 460 also establishes clear consequences for violation of worker protection procedures.
“This legislation sets up a fair and level playing field for everyone involved in public works contracts,” said Hill. “The legislation is intended to protect our taxpayer dollars, public employers, and law abiding public contractors, but most importantly help insure that Georgians get the public works jobs. What the law is missing are clear, straightforward and enforceable penalties for violators. This legislation provides real penalties which can be enforced.”
Hill’s legislation will streamline current Georgia laws relating to the public works system and create a simple-to-understand procedure for the contracting and hiring process. SB 460 also simplifies the practice of using the no-cost federal employment eligibility verification database called ‘E-Verify’. This requirement was established in the Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act of 2006 and provides that all public employers and their contractors must use E-Verify when filling public works positions.
“Since the 2006 law went into effect, far too many public employers and contractors have had to deal with confusing and misleading guidelines about their legal responsibilities and duties. I am confident this legislation will improve employers’ compliance and help insure that legal workers are employed to perform government contract work. ”

Guatemala’s President to promote U.S. amnesty to Obama

Posted by D.A. King at 1:25 pm - Email the author   Print This Post Print This Post

Prensa Libre (Guatemala City, Guatemala) 2/17/10

Guatemala’s President to promote U.S. migratory reform to Obama

Guatemala’s President, Alvaro Colom, said this morning that he will seek to have his counterparts in Central America to lobby jointly for a meeting or at least a phone call with the U.S. President to speak

to him about the migratory reform. The opportunity for Colom to lobby with the regional heads of state will be the “Rio Group” meeting to be held in Cancun, Mexico, next week. (This is the Summit Meeting of Latin American and Caribbean Nations, an organization that excludes Canada and the United States.)

During his “Presidential Dispatch” radio program, originating this time from Washington, Colom said, “We are going to ask our companions and friends, presidents of Central America, to seek a meeting with President Obama or a phone communication, so that he may see that we are united.” Guatemala promotes an 11 point initiative so the United States may be aware of it and may take it into account when the time for migratory reform debate comes around, for which reason he has sought the backing of Central American countries.

Benjamin Monterroso, SEIU (Service Employees International Union) and migrant communities leader in the United States, stated in the same radio program that it is necessary to promote lobbying in the United States Senate because he deemed that the chances of starting the immigration reform debate cannot be after March 21st; otherwise, the issue will be delayed three or four years.
