Below, my Sunday letter to the AJC containing background information and questions on coverage of local immigration law enforcement, (287(g) )), the ACLU and complete, fair and balanced news coverage.

IF you are not fully aware of a Georgia tax-exempt, non-profit group of Georgia luminaries called Georgia Appleseed, I really suggest you take your time, give this a careful read and hit all the links.

You may want to reach for the blood pressure medicine.

Questions for Public Editor regarding complete and balanced news reporting on immigration law enforcement in metro Atlanta/Georgia

AJC: background on the top, questions for public editor below.

After years of hard work by pro-American activists who – like the majority of Americans and AJC readers, want immigration laws enforced – section 287(g) of the 1996 amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act has been implemented in four Georgia county jails. The idea is to use existing law to find and report to federal authorities illegal aliens who have been arrested for additional crimes. It is working very well.

The anything – goes opposition to the enforcement of American immigration laws comes from a variety of sources, but none as dedicated as the ACLU/Ga. Detention Watch ( Whose stated mission is to stop 287(g) ).

The ACLU has published a HOW TO manual for the anti-enforcement advocates it can drag up to stop 287(g). It is titled “Local Police and Immigration Laws Workshop” The main talking points from the ACLU are to always “assert” that 287 (g) is a threat to public safety, is “breaking up families” and to constantly assert that local enforcement is un-American… while using the “racial profiling” card.

Other groups who have similar “Tool-Kits” for stopping 287(g) include La Raza ( THE RACE), MALDEF, various immigration lawyers organizations and a Georgia specific group called Georgia Appleseed which seems to be organized as a front for the banking industry by many “community leaders” and high profile Georgia attorneys. Including at least one candidate for governor.

The list of board members is a who’s who of Georgia.

“The Mission of Georgia Appleseed: To listen to the unheard voices of the poor, the children, the marginalized; to uncover and end the injustices that we would not endure ourselves; to win the battles for our constituency in the courts of public opinion or in the halls of justice that no one else is willing or able to fight.”

They “do it for the children….”

On the Georgia Appleseed’s Website, anyone can see the publications page that contains the HOW TO kill 287(g) publication “Forcing Our Blues Into Gray Areas: Local Police and Federal Immigration Enforcement; A Legal Guide for Advocates. ”

Also several other publications dedicated to their real goal of increasing profits to bankers from illegal aliens ( HERE and HERE and HERE and HERE– which they simply label as “immigrants” .

Most of us can clearly see that it is all about the money.

Also offered are talking points for advocacy and advice on how to encourage illegals to remain in the USA and take a citizen’s place in a post secondary education classroom seat.

All of the HOW TO manuals are essentially the same and all provide the same advice: Scream racism and claim that punishment for illegal immigration is hateful needeless family seperation and somehow “makes the community less safe”.

Here in Cobb County, we have enjoyed hugely succesful use of 287(g) since July 2007. Recently, the ACLU – using the tactics it teaches in its own guidebook – organized a fishing expedition forum in a local church soliciting all manner of tales of human rights violations and…racial profiling.

The ACLU then took the barely-there trumped up fairytales and smears of racism directed at the entire Cobb Police Dept. and the sheriff and put them in a “report” ( “Terror and Isolation in Cobb: How Unchecked Police Power under 287(g) Has Torn Families Apart and Threatened Public Safety,” ) that labled law enforcement as “terroriosm.”

It was a huge hit on other Marxist open borders Websites: AND WAS REPORTED IN YOUR NEWSPAPER.

THE COBB SHERIFF, NEIL WARREN, CONDUCTED HIS OWN INTERNAL INVESTIGATION FOLLOWING THE ACLU REPORT RELEASE AND TO NO ONE’S SURPRISE FOUND THAT ALL OF THE CLAIMS CONTAINED THERE IN SHOULD HAVE BEGUN WITH THE WORDS “ONCE UPON A TIME”. THE REPORT WAS RELEASED TO THE MEDIA – INCLUDING TO YOUR NEWSPAPER. HE ALSO SENT THE REPORT TO U.S. IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT AND POSTED IT ON HIS OFFICIAL WEBSITE.

TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THE AJC HAS NOT TOLD ITS READERS ABOUT THE COBB SHERIFF’S REPORT DEBUNKING THE SMEARS OF THE ENTIRE COBB POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE FROM THE ACLU. ( I note that the same is true of the Associated Press)

Nearly a month ago, Gwinnett County began use of 287 (g). Again, the ACLU howled with racism and anti immigrant smears and again held a meeting to solicit claims of racism.

THE AJC WAS A HUGE HELP IN ATTENDENCE FOR THE ACLU BY RUNNING NOT ONE, BUT TWO SEPERATE ANNOUNCMENTS FOR THE “FORUM.”

From looking at the recent past policy of the AJC, it is reasonable to expect that the sure to come Gwinnett version of the smear report from the ACLU will be well reported in your newspaper as well.

Questions:

Does the AJC news department have any plans to educate its readers on the existence of the various HOW TO publications, or report on the fact that the talking points are closely followed ?

Does the AJC think it would be of interest to readers and fulfill its journalistic duty to report the involvment of the Georgia Appleseed members in attempting to stop immigration law enforcement?

Will the AJC ever tell its readers about the Cobb sheriff’s investigation and report debunking the ACLU charges to balance its news report on the ALCU smears?

Same question related to Gwinnett county when/if a response is offered.

Can the pro-enforcement Americans who lack the resources of the well-funded groups named above expect to see TWO printed AJC announcents alerting readers to any meetings or forums/rallies staged by citizens in favor of enforcement?

Is the AJC news department dedicated to fair, complete and balanced news reporting?

Legal status would boost illegal immigration

Robert Rosas is a name that is sadly unfamiliar to most Americans. It shouldn’t be. His tragic story is one of many that represent the “other side” of the illegal immigration “debate” that is routinely avoided by the various anti-enforcement groups and in much of the media.

Rosas, a three-year U.S. Border Patrol agent, was gunned down while on patrol on the U.S.-Mexico border near Campo, Calif., in July. He was tracking suspected illegal border-crossers who were headed north from Mexico looking for a better life when he was killed by multiple gunshots.

In November, Christian Daniel Castro Alvarez admitted entering the United States illegally from Mexico and killing Rosas. Other individuals suspected to be involved in the murder are still at large.

Maybe they made it into the interior of the United States. Maybe they’ve been rewarded with business licenses. Maybe they’ve been hired by an employer trying to save a buck or two on labor expenses. Maybe they will be given a traffic ticket for a broken taillight by an American policeman, and then sent on their way.

Maybe you soon will see some of them marching with other illegal aliens in American streets demanding taxpayer-funded health care, “justice,” legalization – and U.S. citizenship.

Killed at age 30, Rosas is one of more than 100 Border Patrol agents who have died in the line of duty. He leaves behind a wife, Rosalie, a 2-year-old son, Robert, and a now-1-year-old daughter, Allysa.

Rosas’ death should be remembered when we consider a recent Zogby International opinion poll conducted in Mexico on American immigration policy. The survey finds that people in Mexico understand that granting legal status to illegal aliens in the United States would encourage more illegal immigration to the United States. That’s what happened with the 1986 legalization scheme.

As the top immigrant-sending country for both legal and illegal immigrants, views on immigration in Mexico provide insight into the impact of another amnesty, as well as other questions related to immigration.

Among the findings taken from a report on the poll from the nonprofit, nonpartisan Center for Immigration Studies in Washington, D.C., is that a “clear majority of people in Mexico, 56 percent, thought giving legal status to illegal immigrants in the United States would make it more likely that people they know would go to the United States illegally. Of Mexicans with a member of their immediate household in the United States, 65 percent said a legalization program would make people they know more likely to go to America illegally.”

► “Interest in going to the United States remains strong even in the current recession, with 36 percent of Mexicans telling Zogby they would move to the United States if they could.”

► “An overwhelming majority – 69 percent – of people in Mexico thought that the primary loyalty of Mexican Americans (Mexico- and U.S.-born) should be to Mexico. Just 20 percent said it should be to the United States. The rest were unsure.”

Like most Americans, Robert Rosas was sure of his loyalty. He died defending his country. His dedication to duty represents the majority pro-American side of the “immigration debate.”

Radical anti-enforcement, amnesty-again groups constantly howl that any local enforcement aimed at illegal aliens who make it past the Border Patrol tears undocumented families apart and makes the community less safe.

They should be reminded of Robert Rosas and his American family.

D.A. King Guest Column: Predicting the future on today’s Obama jobs speech

Having held yet another “summit” last week – this time to get ideas on how to reduce American unemployment – President Obama is scheduled to deliver a speech on how to jump start job creation today.

Statistics showed a loss of 11,000 jobs last month. I heard a CNN talking head tell viewers the other day that there are at least six applicants for each available job.

The unemployment rate dipped from 10.2 percent in October to 10 percent in November. Many economists put the actual unemployment rate at 17%. About 190,000 jobs were lost in October.

One pundit puts it this way: “Unemployment isn’t just worse than Obama said it would be with the stimulus. It’s even worse than he said it would be without the stimulus.”

Using the most positive figures, about 16 million Americans are out of work.

At an event Friday, Obama made the remark that “we need to grow jobs and get America back to work as quickly as we can.”

As a long-time American who studies the organized crime that is illegal immigration, which is directly related to Americans going without jobs in their own country (it is also directly related to national security, education, health care, public benefits and services, wasted tax dollars and the rule of law… but that is another column or two) please allow me to play prophet for a minute on what the president will not say today about putting Americans back to work;

Obama will not acknowledge that we could put at least 8 million Americans in jobs tomorrow if we would only enforce existing immigration and employment laws today.

I’ll paint your house if you hear Obama mention the statistics from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that reveal significant drops in work site enforcement activity since Inauguration Day. Administrative arrests (arrests of “undocumented workers” who will be placed into deportation proceedings) have dropped 68 percent, criminal arrests are down 60 percent, criminal indictments have fallen 58 percent and criminal convictions are down 63 percent.

So much change… in only one year!

Last week, the American president pledged to pursue “every additional and responsible step” to speed up job creation, according to the Associated Press.

On the list of things the president will not mention, let’s include the fact that despite fuzzy claims our borders now being secure, U.S. Border Patrol apprehended 556,040 new “undocumented workers” illegally crossing our borders in Fiscal Year 2009, ending 30 September. Optimistic official estimates are one in four or five illegal alien crossers are captured at the border.

I am positive he will not do the math for us.

I’ll go out on a limb and predict that the president of hope and change will not acknowledge that legalizing the millions of illegals now here will only encourage more illegal labor to come for a better life and take even more American jobs.

I will agree with my friend Roy Beck who runs the well respected Washington D.C immigration watchdog organization, NumbersUSA, when he notes that the fact that hundreds of thousands of additional Americans could be working a year from now by changing immigration quotas now. A no cost job creation option.

Another look into the future: Obama will not propose that we make the federal ‘E-Verify’ employment eligibility verification data base mandatory for employers who are hiring in an effort to give jobs only to lawfully present workers.

I predict that under no circumstances will Obama remind us that Barbara Jordan, who chaired the Bill Clinton appointed Commission on Immigration Reform, recommended to Congress that such a system be used… in 1995.

In the political crystal ball of future Obama suggested fixes for the unemployment crisis, I don’t see the leader of the American people promising to obey the law and remove the illegal alien job thieves from the work force. Or to punish the criminal employers who are still paying black market foreign labor instead of their fellow Americans.

You don’t have to be a 21st century Nostradamus to see the political priorities involved on this one.

Unregistered children of illegal migrants a problem ( in Mexico)

In Mexico’s southern border state of Chiapas there are hundreds — perhaps thousands — of illegal residents, mainly from Central America, whose Mexican born children lack birth certificates necessary for federal and state services such as schooling. The parents of these children often do not register their births, as required, because of fear of being arrested for being in Mexico illegally. This leads to future problems of education and basic health needs, both of which are major problems throughout the depressed southern border area. For this reason, changes in the Civil Code are being considered to register the births of all children born in Chiapas regardless of the nationality or legal status of the parents.

Mexican Polls and U.S. Immigration Policy Implications

The topic of immigration is a controversial one in the United States, but not in Mexico. In Mexico pretty nearly everybody agrees that the borders should be open for Mexicans to enter the U.S. at will. Not only that, but even if Mexicans go to the U.S. and become American citizens they, and even their descendants, are still considered Mexicans. This raises a number of complications for U.S. citizenship and national identity.

I resided in Mexico for a decade and a half and found it to be an eye-opening experience. Americans tend to have a romantic view of immigration based upon the Ellis Island days of a century past. Mexicans however, view emigration to the United States very differently. They don’t generally consider that they are ceasing to be Mexicans when they become American citizens.

Since illegal immigration in recent years has become so massive, the question of what the U.S. should do with the millions of illegal aliens [aka “undocumented workers”] in the United States is not about to go away. Constant attempts to enact an amnesty (or “comprehensive immigration reform” or “regularization” or whatever one chooses to call it) are not about to go away.

Amnesty, however, is not popular among the American citizenry. According to a Pulse Opinion Research poll of likely voters, taken in September of 2009, 78% oppose amnesty and only 19% are in favor of it. Among black Americans, the figure is even higher, with 88% in opposition.

Given the current economic situation, with nearly 16 million Americans unemployed, an amnesty is not likely to go over well.

On the other hand, an amnesty would be very popular in Mexico, where U.S. immigration policy is followed closely. I once had a sixth-grade student in Mexico confidently assure me there was going to be an amnesty.

This is an example of the wide chasm between how immigration is viewed in the two countries.

A recent Zogby poll conducted in Mexico illustrates some of the complications and contradictions in the immigration issue. This poll was conducted in August and September of 2009.

Unsurprisingly, two-thirds of those polled reported knowing a Mexican who lives in the U.S., while a third of those polled reported an immediate family member residing north of the border.

The Mexicans who were polled were asked about the prospect of an amnesty in the United States, and 56% thought that such an amnesty would increase Mexican illegal immigration to the United States. And for Mexicans with family members in the U.S., 65% thought it would increase it.

I believe they are right, an amnesty would increase illegal emigration from Mexico to the U.S. After all, the 1986 amnesty signed into law by Ronald Reagan was followed by an increase.

Another related issue which deserves more attention is how Mexican-Americans are viewed in Mexico. In the poll, 69% believed that Mexican-Americans (whether born in Mexico or the U.S.) owe their primary loyalty to Mexico.

I noticed something similar while residing in Mexico. Mexican-Americans were considered essentially Mexicans, even those who were born in the United States. In recent years the Mexican government, after years of ignoring Mexican-Americans, has begun to work together with them in order to expand Mexican influence in the U.S.

The traditional American immigration paradigm was that immigrants would come to the U.S. and renounce their former loyalty. In fact, that’s exactly what is promised in the naturalization oath. Yet it’s significant that Mexicans don’t necessarily see it this way, especially in today’s atmosphere.

Furthermore, in the Zogby poll 69% of those polled thought that the government of Mexico ought to represent the interests of Mexican-Americans (once again, both Mexican and U.S.-born) in the United States. This would create a conflict of interest, as Mexico would be claiming sovereignty over Americans of Mexican ancestry.

The poll to me seems accurate, and fits in with the impressions I picked up while residing in Mexico for a decade and a half.

Given the magnitude of Mexican immigration to the U.S., the boldness of Mexican government involvement north of the border, and the conflicting loyalties of many new American citizens, these are important issues. They ought not be considered taboo topics, as they are in the mainstream media. Instead, they should be freely discussed by U.S. citizens and our lawmakers.

The Irony of Mexico’s Problems along its Southern Border

So what is the Mexican government doing about its own southern border problems?

The Mexican navy has actually beefed up its presence in the region to try and deter some of this activity. In August 2009, the navy announced that it had installed six new naval stations in Mexico’s Chiapas state near the Suchiate and Usumacinta rivers. In November, the navy unveiled plans to start building nine bases that would allow it to more effective patrol the border with Guatemala and combat the activities of criminal groups.

And the increased naval presence can’t come soon enough.
