Amnesty Pushers Concoct Six Straw Men

It’s an old device in politics: Set up a straw man to criticize when you can’t win an argument on your own. Such tactics, unfortunately, are standard fare when it comes to efforts by a handful of special interest groups to bring about amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Organizations such as the National Council of La Raza, the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Migration Policy Institute know that most Americans disagree with their desire for amnesty. Most Americans want to see immigration laws enforced. So these groups create straw men. They use them as diversionary tactics to criticize the way in which immigration laws are enforced without ever admitting to their true amnesty goals.

Who are these Straw Men? Let’s take a look:

A short request for a little help in Georgia in enlightening a local TV station news director on the crime of illegal immigration and the cure: law enforcement.

Here in Georgia, we are very proud of the fact that we have been successful in getting the federal 287 (g) program implemented in three county jails, with another metro Atlanta county about to begin the program and at least three more in the application process.

We are proving the obvious: Enforcement works.

Illegal aliens are migrating out of the counties where the law is being enforced. The America hating illegal alien/open borders lobby is having an absolute cow over our success and the race-baiting smear attacks began a long time ago.

A few of the far left crazies staged a sparsely attended rally last Saturday in conjunction with the May Day rallies across the nation to protest American sheriffs in Georgia using 287 (g) and the enforcement of immigration laws in general. Nothing new, I realize.

Teodoro Maus, a Mexican citizen and former Mexican Consul General here was the rally organizer. The ACLU has organized an entire sub-ministry of opposition to our 287 (g) success called “Georgia Detention Watch”. Info HERE if you are interested.

This is where we are asking for a little help: A local TV station, CBS NEWS ATLANTA – TV 46 sent out a reporter to cover the Saturday illegal alien rally – he did a veritable infomercial for the illegals and never came within 100 feet of the Americans who took time out of their Saturday to show opposition to the illegals and Maus Inc.

Yes – most of the illegals protest signs were in Spanish.

Using the proven theory of constant pressure, we sent some polite e-mail to the TV station manager complaining about the ridiculously unbalanced and incomplete two minute news hit on the poor victimized illegal aliens (“immigrants!”) who now must deal with actual law enforcement.

After what they describe as “ being flooded with email” two days later ( yesterday, Teusday, May 5) the same TV station sends a reporter to my house to “balance the first news piece”…you can see that two minute news report HERE. I am curious to see just how many comments to the TV station news editor we can get.

If you have a few extra minutes to help these TV people understand the opinion of the majority of America and the concept of words having meaning and what real immigrants are – NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE, please send a short, polite e-mail note with your thoughts on the last news piece?

See if you can outline for them if it is the big bald ugly guy (no laughing) or the MALDEF spokes hole that has a rational argument and who is the mindless race-baiter. Let the TV news editor know to what conclusion you come? I get the feeling the latest reporter – Harry Samler – is trying to learn the issue and be fair and balanced…it is not him that is the problem…honest.

Illegal immigration, Liberal Elites, and Obama

Millions of Hispanics, mostly poor and uneducated, have immigrated to America illegally since the early 1990s. Most are Mexicans and most of them are high school dropouts. Compared to what they might have had in a slum or impoverished rural area of Mexico or Central America, these immigrants have done well here.

It has been different story for their neighbors — middle-class Americans. For them, illegal immigration has often meant a deterioration of their neighborhoods, public schools, and their quality of life — especially across America’s Southwest.

Some have watched their culture erode: It’s not uncommon to see Mexican flags flying in Spanish-speaking enclaves in towns and cities from Texas to California. This includes “sanctuary cities” like Austin, the Texas state capital, where until recently I’d lived for the past few years.

Most middle-class Americans are fed up with illegal immigration. They get no sympathy from liberal elites, however, including the open-borders elites at that lofty bastion of American journalism, the agenda-setting New York Times…

Amnesty Without Congress

I’ve mentioned before (most recently here) the use of Temporary Protected Status as a way for the president to unilaterally give what amounts to permanent amnesty to illegal aliens, granting them work authorization and Social Security numbers. I’d never seen any group demand TPS for all illegals, though, until I saw this, which lists the many ways the president could amnesty some or all illegal aliens on his own authority. TPS is for illegals who can’t be deported because of emergency conditions — a hurricane destroyed their country’s airport or a volcano buried their island in ash. But a spokesman for the group making the demand, the Southern California Immigration Coalition, justified TPS in an interview by saying that:

To deport all these people to Mexico would create an emergency crisis in their own economy. And that’s the crisis we would have in Mexico. Coupled with the drug wars that are going on, the problem that we have with the virus, the flu, it would just create great havoc for Mexico in its economy.

Mark my words — as it becomes increasingly clear that no amnesty will be forthcoming from Congress this year, expect a rising chorus of demands from both the Left and the rope-selling Right that the president circumvent Congress and use his popularity to “fix” the immigration problem this way.
