D.A. King: Enforce borders instead of service cuts for citizens
Overheard the other day: “Immigration is not a hot issue right now – people are concerned about jobs, the Georgia budget cuts, the mortgage meltdown, education and health care … even the presidential candidates didn’t talk about immigration during the campaign …” How preposterous.
The usual suspects are indeed talking about immigration, both legal and illegal. They never stop the conversation because promoting victimhood, amnesty, open borders, bilingualism, increased immigration and rabidly defending the crime of illegal immigration is an immense, thriving business.
The presidential candidates spoke mucho about immigration and amnesty, but mostly in the Spanish-language media.
In the native language of the majority of the illegal aliens, candidate Obama repeatedly made the promise of a do-over of the amnesty and path to citizenship of 1986 in his first year in office. Candidate McCain later raised the stakes on Univision, a Spanish language television network. He pledged to present a legalization plan to Congress “on my first day.”
Just another reason this long-time American is not a member of any political party and why he could not vote for either nominee.
U.S. Border Patrol Agents are talking, too. That besieged agency reports apprehending more than one million illegal aliens at our borders in fiscal year 2008. Apprehensions have always been a dependable method of estimating the volume of illegal entries into our country. The optimistic estimate is that one of four illegals are caught crossing.
The low estimate from last year was that illegal aliens had taken about 5 percent of American jobs. That’s probably “xenophobic” and “mean-spirited” to mention while our unemployment rate soars. Si?
Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway is talking about illegal immigration and enforcement. He has applied for federal training – called 287 g authority – to locate and begin the deportation process for the illegals in his jail who escaped the Border Patrol.
In a 26-day trial run ended last week, 917 illegals “looking for a better life” were found in his jail, including 13 charged with murder, 154 with felony drug charges and 23 charged with child molestation.
Enforcement works. Including Cobb, illegals migrate out of every community in which the law is actually enforced.
The ACLU is a veritable fountain of conversation on “immigration..” It is steadfastly opposed to enforcement of U.S. immigration laws. Jerry Gonzalez of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials does little but talk about illegal aliens – while trying to make you believe they are victimized “immigrants.” Any suggestion that immigration law be enforced is met with snarling accusations of “hate speech.” If you see this character, remind him that “immigrants” do not require amnesty … por favor?
Mortgage lenders, having been allowed to illegally make mortgage loans to illegal aliens for years may be silent on the issue now – but wait until public attention wanes and they start loaning their taxpayer funded bail-out money. If you listen closely, you will hear the whispered sales pitch to the newest batch of illegals: “The coast is clear, ya’ll come on in for a loan.”
The term “banksters” comes to mind.
That federal law that makes it a crime to harbor an illegal alien or to encourage him to remain in the United States? Forget about it. The Bush administration did and the Obama administration will. Follow the money.
Americans should be talking about illegal immigration and our children’s education. Cobb School District spokesman Jay Dillon says the cost of educating one child for one K-12 school year here is $9,036.00. Legal or illegal. Budget cuts anyone?
For the readers who have convinced themselves that health care is somehow a separate issue from the illegal immigration crisis – stay out of the local emergency rooms. A trip there will destroy your fantasy.
The Washington-based Federation for American Immigration Reform recently published a report estimating Georgia spends about $1.6 billion a year for illegal aliens and their dependents to provide K-12 education, public health care and incarceration.
Due to the budget shortage, in November the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville was closed. We may cut the “Meals on Wheels” program for our seniors.
On funding, we are now saying “no” to citizens quite often.
Because we know it works, shouldn’t we be talking more about enforcing our immigration laws before we talk about where to cut services to Americans?
Or am I being “mean-spirited”?

Moving Forward With E-Verify: Program to Check Legal Status Already 99.5% Accurate
Sep 19, 2008
WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The E-Verify program, which
allows employers to check the immigration status of new employees, has been
steadily improving and is now 99.5 percent accurate, according to a new paper
by the Center for Immigration Studies. This voluntary program is already
screening more than one in ten new hires nationwide, and as of September 13,
2008, has processed 6.21 million queries.
E-Verify is set to expire on November 30, 2008, unless it is re-authorized by
Congress. The House of Representatives has already passed a reauthorization
bill by a vote of 407-2. The Senate has yet to take action.
To help inform debate over E-Verify, the Center for Immigration Studies has
produced a thorough evaluation. The Backgrounder, entitled “If It’s Fixed,
Don’t Break It: Moving Forward with E-Verify,” is authored by Janice Kephart,
Director of National Security Studies at the Center and a former counsel to
the 9/11 Commission. The report covers the many facets of the E-Verify debate:
statistics regarding usage, cost, and effectiveness; legislative history;
executive orders affecting the program; the relationship of E-Verify to
worksite enforcement; and past improvements to the program as well as future
goals.
The report is available online at www.cis.org. Among the findings:
— As of the first half of FY 2007, only one-half of one percent of
eligible employees screened had to take additional steps (like
correcting Social Security records) to obtain work authorization;
overall, the system is 99.5% accurate.
— More than 93 percent of employees are verified within five seconds;
another 1.2 percent are verified within 24 hours. A new Photo
Screening
Tool and a streamlined procedure for naturalized citizens to receive
authorization are increasing accuracy and efficiency for employers and
employees; naturalized citizens no longer need to take remedial action
at Social Security.
— About 5 percent of new employees are not confirmed as work authorized,
mirroring the same percentage of illegal aliens estimated to be in the
labor force.
— When E-Verify became web-based later in 2004, 1,533 employers had
signed
up. As of September 13, 2008, there are 85,816 employers representing
over 446,000 sites and over 6.21 million queries processed.
Currently,
about 1,000 new employers join per week.
— Eleven states require use of E-Verify in certain circumstances (AZ,
CO,
GA, ID, MN, MO, MS, NC, OK, RI, and UT).

Conway, ICE to be commended for upholding law
By D.A. King
The startling result of the combined efforts of Sheriff Conway’s office and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the just-ended 26-day enforcement “surge” provides valuable and memorable insight into the crime that is illegal immigration.
Not to mention into the industry that is built around aiding and abetting illegal aliens.
Thanks to the courageous attention to duty of Sheriff Butch Conway, more than 900 illegal aliens arrested for additional crimes will face deportation and no longer roam the streets of Gwinnett. Thank you, Butch Conway.
Thirteen of the soon-to-be-deported illegal aliens who were able to elude apprehension by American Border Patrol were in jail accused of murder – 28 with armed robbery charges. “Willing workers” facing prosecution for kidnapping? Eleven.
For the majority of Gwinnett residents whose first concern is public safety and the equal application of American law, the operation in preparation for federal 287(g) authority to allow Gwinnett jail deputies to check immigration status of inmates was a huge success.
For the corporate-funded, increasingly militant far-left illegal alien lobby that howls “racial profiling” and “hate” in defense of the uninterrupted supply of resentful victims of geography needed to expand the entitlements and political power on which it feeds, the operation represents a huge threat.
According to news reports, of the foreign born population that was booked into the Gwinnett County jail in less than a month, nearly 70 percent were in our nation in violation of our immigration laws. Those illegal aliens represent about 30 percent of the total jail population.
It is important to note that 100 percent of the jail’s prisoner intake was screened for immigration status. Stating the obvious truth for grateful residents, Conway said “I can categorically state that Gwinnett County is safer today because of this operation.”
Child molestation charges hung over 23 of the illegals discovered by Conway and federal authorities.
Led and advised by the ACLU and the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, leaders of groups such as “Georgia Detention Watch” and “Atlantans Building Leadership for Empowerment” have been taught to parrot the mindless time-worn talking points that assisting ICE in removing illegal aliens “is local enforcement trying to enforce something that should be corrected at the national level,” as ABLE’s Tracy Blagec told the media.
On the ACLU’s Web site, we are treated to that radical group’s take on Conway’s attention to duty: “We believe local enforcement of federal immigration laws leads to racial profiling as well as erosion of trust between immigrant communities and the police, making our communities less safe.”
Raise your hand if you think deporting murderers and child molesters makes it “less safe.” Raise your hand if you can explain what race “illegal” is.
Gwinnett residents should be raising their voices against the special-interest groups who will never stop fighting any enforcement of our immigration laws. Including the permanent authority for Conway’s deputies to multiply the effect of the ICE Agents with a 287(g) agreement.
The premise that we should stop enforcement – for any reason – is beyond absurd, and it is dangerous.

Inger Eberhart: Illegal alien’s crimes were costly
Abel Gonzalez-Perez, the 15-year-old awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide and other charges in the hit-and-run death of a 19-year-old woman last year in Athens-Clarke County, entered the United States illegally, worked illegally here, drove a vehicle alone, participated in underage drinking, drove while under the influence and hid from the law for a week (Story, “Teen guilty in fatal hit-and-run,” Jan. 27).
The crime that began the cascade of other crimes was Gonzalez-Perez entering the United States illegally. This set the stage for a 3-year-old to grow up without his mother.
U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has introduced legislation to provide amnesty to illegal aliens currently in the United States. There are more than 20 million illegal aliens within our borders, meaning Reid’s bill is not a viable solution. Amnesty rewards illegal behavior and encourages increased illegal immigration.
In 2005, the Government Accountability Office conducted a study of 55,322 illegal aliens. The study found 96 percent had more than one arrest and 58 percent had more than six arrests. Forty-five percent of offenses were drug- or immigration-related, 15 percent were property-related, and 12 percent were for violent offenses such as murder, robbery, assault and sex-related crimes.
The late Barbara Jordan, the Bill Clinton-appointed chairwoman of the Commission on Immigration Reform, stated, “To make sense about the national interest in immigration, it is necessary to make distinctions between those who obey the law and those who violate it. … Unlawful immigration is unacceptable.”
As an African-American conservative, I think the United States must get serious about illegal immigration. How many more victims of illegal aliens must we have before the Obama administration acknowledges we must secure our borders and deport illegal aliens permanently?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Washington DC) Today, U.S. Representative Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL) announced that he will spearhead a five-week national tourâvisiting 14 U.S. citiesâto document the harm caused to citizens across our nation in the absence of comprehensive immigration reform.
In an unprecedented nationwide campaign, Gutierrez has partnered with local communities and churches to hold rallies for thousands of U.S. citizens whose families have been or risk being torn apart by our broken immigration system. Many members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are also holding similar events in their districts.
“As a nation âas citizensâ we cannot wait any longer for fair and just immigration reform,” said Rep. Gutierrez. “Across America, parents and children, husbands and wives are being torn apart by a system that values quotas over family values and which undermines our economic security in a time of crisis. It is for this reason that U.S. citizens in each of these 13 cities are joining this campaign and standing up for real, lasting change.”

More than 900 Gwinnett inmates to be deported
More than half had a previous criminal history
By ANDRIA SIMMONS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Thursday, February 05, 2009
Federal immigration officials flagged for deportation 915 foreign-born inmates at the Gwinnett County jail during a 26-day surge that ended on Thursday.
Of the inmates identified as being in the country illegally, 489 had a previous criminal history, said Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway.
Officials from the Gwinnett County Sheriffâs Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the results during a joint press conference Thursday at the conclusion of a targeted enforcement effort that began Jan. 12.
Federal immigration officials worked in 15-person teams from 6 a.m. to midnight during that time frame to interview all the inmates and determine their immigration status. The inmates were charged with a range of offenses including murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, theft, traffic violations, and probation violation, said Larry Orton, assistant field officer director for the ICE Criminal Alien Program in Atlanta.
Gwinnett County is still waiting to hear whether it will be accepted into a federal program called 287(g) that would allow local jailers to begin deportation paperwork on criminal aliens, said Conway.
âI would like to see a program like this 24/7 at the Gwinnett County jail,â Conway said. âGwinnett County is safer today because of this operation and the work these ICE agents did.â
Cobb, Whitfield and Hall counties and the Georgia State Patrol already participate in the 287(g) program.
Opponents say it would increase the likelihood of racial profiling and create distrust between law enforcement and immigrant communities.
Rev. Tracy Blagec, a spokesperson for Atlantans Building Leadership for Empowerment (ABLE), said she suspects many of the undocumented aliens in the Gwinnett jail committed only traffic violations.
âThis is local enforcement trying to enforce something that should be corrected at the national level,â Blagec said.
She instead advocates federal measures that would speed the path to citizenship, allow more work visas and permit immigrants to obtain driverâs licenses. (NOTE FROM D.A. -IMMIGRANTS HAVE NO PROBLEM GETTING A GEORGIA DRIVERS LICESNSE – AND THEY DO NOT REQUIRE AMNESTY)
