Rep. Charlie Norwood loses cancer battle
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Georgia, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer, his office announced.

He was 65.

Norwood was battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and non-small cell lung cancer, according to a statement released from his office.

The congressman decided to forgo further treatment last week, electing to return home to Georgia for hospice care.

The schedule of public services will be announced when Georgia’s 10th Congressional district office finalizes the plans, according to the statement.

Norwood has represented Georgia’s 10th district since 1995 and easily won reelection last November.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Florida, announced Norwood’s passing on the House floor and asked for a moment of silence.

During his State of the Union Address last month, President Bush asked members of Congress to pray for the health of Norwood and Sen. Tim Johnson, the South Dakota Democrat who suffered a brain hemorrhage in December.
