Open letter to Russ Bynum -Associated Press
I sent this to Russ Bynam here in Georgia [ RBynum@AP.org ] this morning in response to his Friday AP report on law enforcement in Stillmore Georgia. I also sent a copy of my note to Bynum’s editor in Atlanta, Barry Bedlan. [ BBedlan@AP.org ]
The AP report went to more than 80 news outlets all over the world. See here for complete article.
More on this one soon.
Russ, in its final [edited?] form, your report on Stillmore has set a new low for reporting on illegal immigration and law enforcement. Congrats, you are now very well-known among people who pay attention. The bar you have moved is one that many of us didn’t think could be lowered much further.
While it is still early, so far no one I know can point to a “news” report on the issue that contains less balance or a more clearly demonstrated agenda. It is somewhat disconcerting to have such able competition in editorial – commentary writing.
Here is a link to the SPJ code of ethics. Remember that?
Smooth how you worked in the “This reminds me of what I read about Nazi Germany, the Gestapo coming in and yanking people up...” quote, BUT…FYI… the too seldom enforcement of ID, employment and immigration laws involved here is very much like they do it in…Mexico.
In a word…yuck.
