State Contracts To Illegal Labor? - Not in Arizona

By D.A. King, Douglas Enterprise, February 4, 2006

In 2003, the senior U.S. Senator from Arizona, John McCain wrote to a constituent; “according to U.S. Border Patrol apprehension statistics it is estimated that almost four million people crossed our borders illegally in 2002”.

Having recently returned from our southern border and spoken with many dedicated but frustrated Border Patrol Agents while I watched what can only be called an invasion, I can sadly report that in a war on terror, the flood of illegal and un-inspected entries continues unabated.

Also in 2003, Georgia state senator Sam Zamarripa [D-Atlanta], told the Georgia Senate that there were “20 million” people in the United States illegally.

President Bush’s Secretary of Department of Homeland Security, Tom Ridge - again in 2003 - told the world that there were “8-12 million illegal aliens” in our nation.

Now, in 2006, the most commonly used figure is…11 million!

Confused? Don’t be.

Eleven million is the lowest number all concerned hope you will believe. It is easier to promote amnesty for 11 million than what likely now well exceeds 20 million.

Not sure whose figures are most accurate?

Put your money on Zamarripa.

Accurate information on these numbers is crucial for him…as he is one of the many who profits from the presence of the black market labor in our republic. He is a founding partner - and Marketing Director - of United Americas Bank [ aka Banco Unido] here in Georgia. A bank that makes mortgage loans to the illegals.

Federal law makes it a crime not only to employ illegal aliens, but also to assist or encourage them to remain in for what is for now, our United States. Doing so for the purpose of commercial advantage or private financial gain can be punished by imprisionment of 10 years.

McCain has bonded with that giant of American morality, Teddy Kennedy [D-MA] in proposing that we not only grant amnesty to the illegals - and their employers - but also give them a path to citizenship.

With his Atlanta-based non-profit “coalition” - the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials - Zamarripa has joined forces with such American luminaries as Jane Fonda to assist illegal aliens, in whom he has a vested financial interest.

More about profiteers, liberals and Democrats further down.

What is the GOP leadership here in Georgia saying, and doing, about our having one of the largest and fastest growing illegal alien populations in the nation?

Not so much.

In the last session of the Georgia General Assembly, state senator Chip Rogers [R-Woodstock] introduced several bills that, if passed - and then enforced - would discourage illegal aliens from choosing Georgia as the next stop from our un-secured borders.

One of them, SB 169, would require that state contracts go only to those who can prove, using an existing federal verification system - the “ Basic Pilot Program” - that their workers have valid and legal Social Security numbers.

What a concept.

Under the Gold Dome, this attempt at making certain that taxpayer dollars are not spent on criminal labor has been met with a very noticeable silence from the office of the Governor, his Democratic challengers - and House and Senate leadership of both parties. Not to mention most of the media.

Surprised? Don’t be. Just follow the money. And the unspoken agenda.

Expect that state leadership will continue to mutter that “illegal immigration is a federal problem” and try very hard to ignore what the Georgia taxpayer cannot.

More on those profiteers, liberals and Democrats.

In October, having seen the writing on the adobe concerning the election she must face this year, the Democrat Governor of Arizona, Janet Napolitano, signed an executive order that stipulates contractors doing business with the state of Arizona be monitored to insure that their workers are in the country legally.

Sound familiar?

The Business Journal in Phoenix writes; “It would be embarrassing for the state government and governor if government agencies and/or government contractors are caught employing illegally undocumented immigrants”.

Indeed.

From here in Marietta, we wonder how the people of Arizona got their Governor’s attention on the crisis.

Is it because they live in a “border state”?

Possibly - but because of the president’s refusal to secure American borders, we all live in border states now.

We should all be demanding that Governor Perdue take a position on illegal immigration in Georgia.

Insuring that state contracts go to legal employers is a great place to begin.

What a concept.
